Frosen semen

Anyone here that has some experience on using or taking frozen semen? Good or bad experience.

We can import semen to Iceland, but only frosen semen.

Not something I've done but talking to other breeders I've heard the sucess greatly depends on the skill of the implanter and getting the timing right.

In Iceland there are only 2 vets that have specialized in implanting frozen semen and I have heard both success and failure stories. I have in the past asked some breeders (especially in giants) about this possibility and still haven’t found anyone that is willing to try with my and that’s sad because in closed country like Iceland, this is something to really try.

I’m going on seminar tonight at the HRFI (Icelandic Kennel club) with Alain Fontbonne (French Vet) that specialty is artificial insemination, hope to learn something new.

Now UK was for long time closed country like Iceland, was semen import allowed?

Yes, it is allowed but we need special permission from the kennel club to do artificial insemination.

We have tried this long time ago, unfortunately without succes. I enclosed a link from a Dutch vet who has quite some experience in this field. May be it can be of any help.

Hello, my vet is a AI specialist and uses the Clone technique; it is a special technique of semen management & implant that uses a norwegian catheter for a transcervical implant, who seems to give much more chances of success both with chilled and frozen semen.

Personally I never used AI on my own dogs, but it seems that many breeders here in Italy are working with Clone AI with lots of success both for having litters and for exporting semen.

In 2007 i did'nt went to the male for differents raisons, i ask to send frozed semence, all was ok ! without a movment of strike by the transporters ! froze semence arrived 24 hours after ! the cover was ok but my female had felt her progesteron and no pup ...

One of this clinic CLON is in Spain, very near from us. I think there is only one in our country. We didn´t try it, but we know the vet and we see him ok, with experience in such things. The truth is that I would like to know more experiences of breeders, because it´s rather expensive and as I know without any guaranty. I believe that the success would depend on a good job of both vets (one with male and the other one with female).

I bred bullmastiffs earlier. My second (and last) litter with bullmastiffs was done with frozen semen from US.
It was very good choice and I had a litter of 9. Actually litter of 11, but 2 puppies didn't make it trough the delivery. My bitch was inseminated in Tampere, Finland by Dr Palolahti. Insemination was made in 18th day of heat, few days later than normal mating would have been proper to do.
Litter was very succesful and afterwords I think it was worth all that money and effort.

This is very intresting method,especcially if you want use someones who died a lot of years ago,but needs for breeding now.
Who know where possible to find informtion about which frozen semen avalable now?
I'm intresting especial Giant schnauzers.
Maybe web sites of Frozen semen's bank?
How to find this info?

I am thinking you'd have to just ask individual breeders. Some collect on their boys and store in cryo tanks here in North American.. ( canada and USA) and some do not collect.... if you are looking for aparticular stud from past, best to ask the breeder ofthat stud or kennel owner... this may help... I know for me, I collect and store and can ship anywhere internationally, I have heard you cannot in Russia though so this is also something to look in to??? It is becoming a very popular choice within breeders, and making it more accessible to make choices giving breeders much more options.. I really think this is an awesome technological option...

Yes,Leah,i know about it.In Russia it not possible to do ,but possible to go to Finland,Germany and etc.for do it.
But to ask each breeder it difficult,would be perfect if exist web site about all avalable semen from all dogs with all information...

Hello - I am in America and I have much experience with frozen semen import, breeding and puppies. We have 2 and 3 generation dogs all from frozen implants. We do this with our Bouvier des Flandres because the best are in Europe. We have imported semen from Norway and France. You are all correct - [/b]TIMING IS EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!

Our bitches are tested for progesterone from blood samples. This helps tell the vet when the bitch ovulates. This is the hard part - because after the bitch ovulates the vet waits 24 -48 hours to let the eggs travel to the uterus. Then the semen is thawed, checked for vitals and implanted directly into bitches uterus.

The big problem is the semen only lives a few hours. They used to think it was a few days but NO. New studies show the semen dies much faster than they once thought. This makes the timing for implanting of semen very important. It takes many blood tests for progesterone $$$$

But the puppies are worth it becuase you get superior pedigrees and in some cases you can access lines long gone --- IF SEMEN IS COLLECTED AND FROZEN FROM THE BEST. We have Bouviers with grandparents who were alive in the 1970s becuase we used frozen semen from dogs dead long times. This is wonderful when you are a student of pedigrees and want the best for your program. Registering the litter is allowed -- just more paperwork.



We have had litters with 9, 5, 2, 1 and some ZERO. Bouviers have smaller litters anyway so the numbers with SCHNZ might be different. This is why I say TIMING is EVERYTHING. The Europeans are the vets who are progessive and doing the best work. My vet in America studies in Sweden or Denmark for new technique.

I encourage you to consider collecting your males now so we may all benefit in the future with quality and healthy lines. Also, you can collect bitches eggs - they are working on using surrogate dogs to carry fertilized eggs.

We will use frozen semen again. The results are worth it. It is not hard to import the semen from Europe to America. I do not know what it is like to send semen to Europe from America.

But how possible to find info where is possible to find in Europe frozen semen from dogs which died a lot of years ago?such info not wrote on all corners...
