The rules of the clubs?

Post  Esther on Sat Jul 17, 2010 1:07 am

Dear schnauzer friends

What is the rules in your clubs when cataract or PRA is found in the dog?

Does the dog go directly to breeding ban and if, how about offspring, siblings, parents?

In the UK the dog can't be banned from breeding - that is up to the ethics of the owner of that dog.

The breed clubs ask for a copy of the eye test and that of the affected dog or litter so that it can be published in the breed club magazines so all member breeders can be made aware.

We also ask that DNA samples are taken from all affected dogs and close relatives and sent to the Animal Health Trust, along with pedigree and official eye test certificate so that we can gather enough samples to enable us to start looking for the markers to have a DNA test for these problems.

If the dog is PRA affected and it is sure to be a hereditary form (and not from having Toxocara) then it would be worth having the DNA test done in america to see if it is the type A PRA, if it is, then close relatives can be tested and bred from to appropriatly tested partners.

It is the same here in the U.S.

Pedigree indicates what the animal should be.
Conformation indicates what the animal appears to be.
But performance indicates what the animal actually is.

Starting 1.1.2011, if a dog has either HC, PRA, RD (other than mTD) or PHPV/PHTVL stages 2-6, its puppies will not be registered by the Finnish Kennel Club. Our breed club approved this recently and it also was passed by the FKC.

Hello,

Club rules are always going to be a work in progress with revisions as needed. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure their dog does not attend club events if their dog is in ill health, still carries stitches after a surgery or is under treatment for a contagious disorder. Bitches, while in season, may not attend club events. While on club walks, unless your dog is fully desensitised to livestock, you must take extra care and not allow him to approach any animal. During club events, do not throw sticks or similar for your dog. Apart from the danger to the dog itself, 10 dogs chasing the same stick usually means trouble!.Always clean up after your dog and get rid of the mess responsibly. Also, make sure your dog is wormed regularly to protect it, other animals and people.

Thanks,

I have a 50/50 stand in this issue. I'm against banning the breed but I'm also not happy with what will happen to the pups. This is a very difficult issue.
