I'm surprised.... I didn't think FCI allowed the colors to be crossed. Or is it only some countries that do not allow that?

Interesting.

"ZWERGSCHNAUZER (183):  Avoid breeding pepper&salt to black&silver in order to preserve the recessive black&silver colour in the breed."

This would also be true of white, which is also recessive. Strange that they didn't address that also.

One can breed those recessive colors out ONCE, since all of the offspring from that breeding will carry those recessive genes. It would be the following generation where they *could* be lost (or not). I once traced my first schnauzer (BS) back through her pedigree, and although other BS had obviously been produced through all those years, the first actual BS ancester did not appear until 40 years earlier... back in the 1930's. All of her ancestors through all of those years were SP, with at least one line coming down carrying BS in each generation, until her parents doubled-up on that gene and produced two BS puppies.

The sire of your litter will produce white, depending on what he is bred to, and some of your puppies may also be able to produce white. That would not be known until they are bred (depending on what color they are bred with).

Be careful with crossing the SP to the other colors (at least the black and BS). Don't do it too often as I think it starts to ruin all the colors. The SP gets too dark and starts to lose its banded hairs, and the other colors (black/BS) get too many white and banded hairs in their coats. I have not seen a problem with crossing the black and BS colors. I have no knowledge with white, obviously since we do not recognize that color here.

Here when I cross colors, one parent is always BS so that I do not lose that color. I have yet to do a black-to-black breeding here.

I think it's reason they avoid to cross p-s with b-s.

ow you know white is normal colour here in FCI - and genepole start to be really small. There are some dogs in every pedigree. So we need new bloodlines and only posibility is cross whites with other colours.
I try to work with colours and hope to get new pedigrees for whites Smile

My first white breed from other colours is father of our W1 Litter and we got a really nice offspring from him Smile

Good luck with that!

I always thought white schnauzers would be so pretty with their little dark eyes and black noses in all that white.... and several years ago I finally got to see one in person. I hated it<G> My younger daughter said to me, "Whatever made you think you would like white schnauzers? You LOVE your dark dogs!" She was right. I loved my BLACK and SILVERS... and I then fell head-over-heels in love with the BLACK ones. Yep... the darker the better for me<G> (I don't care much for the SP either<G>)
